There’s a Part of My Heart in Wonthaggi
The Unofficial Town Anthem
The History
In 1934, during a period of significant industrial hardship for the local mining community, renowned Australian songwriter Jack O’Hagan OBE composed “There’s a Part of My Heart in Wonthaggi.” O’Hagan, famous for “Along the Road to Gundagai,” captured the resilient spirit and pride of the town in a melody that has endured for nearly a century.
A Living Tradition
The Wonthaggi Citizens’ Band has served as the custodian of this song for generations. It is our tradition to perform the anthem as the closing number of every concert. Whether at the Union Theatre or in the streets, the final notes of this song signal a deep connection between the performers and the community.
